If you have never held a handpan, fewer notes is an advantage. The 9 note model has the most space between tone fields, so each note is easier to strike cleanly while your hands learn the movement. D Kurd is also one of the most widely taught scales: you can follow tutorials and play-alongs from your first week.
You don't need to read music. Start with 2 or 3 notes, listen to how they sound together, and build from there. Short, regular sessions help more than long ones.
